Episode 14: US Open 2023 Mid-Tournament Catch Up
Week 1 was a total mess – figuretively and literally. Players have “the flu” and are retiring or showing up sick as hell. Then you have people like Ostapenko hitting 80 errors (!) and winning. It’s New York. It’s the US Open. And it’s fun as hell.

Here’s breakdown of the first week and what we discussed on this week’s podcast:
MAGA Retirements
Someone will miss you, but it won’t be us. Tennis said goodbye to John Isner, Jack Sock and Coco Vandeweghe this US Open. Even better? Two of the three lost on Pride Night.
Coco V. did give us some iconic moments though. I’ll never forget watching her in Asheville for Fed Cup (listen to the episode for more, including Serena laughing at her) and this moment when she refused to warm up after a “heat” break:
A Pride Day to be Proud Of
We have been disappointed by other pride days and nights, but with the US Open we were only disappointed in some of the responses. Cheers, US Open.
This pic of Carlos Alcaraz seems relevant to pride day too:
Ostapenko Remains a Gay Icon
From throwing people out of her matches, hitting (literally) hundreds of winners and errors, Ostapenko gave us everything we wanted in week one.
Haters Can Hate But Ben Shelton is Here to Stay
Keep talking, because Ben keeps winning. The showman (yes, I said it) is into a major second week again this week. And the stands are packed when he plays. Did you see that 147 MPH serve?
